Our Te Tiriti Commitment

Our Commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi

The Tauranga Community Foodbank is committed to honoring Te Tiriti o Waitangi and upholding it’s principles of partnership, participation, and protection.

We are committed to working collaboratively with Māori, whānau, hapū, iwi, and over 60 referral agencies to ensure our services are accessible, respectful, and responsive to the needs and aspirations of those we serve.

We strive to create a welcoming environment where mana is upheld, cultural identities are respected, and people are treated with dignity and compassion.

We seek to address barriers to food security, promote equitable access to food support, and contribute to the wellbeing of whānau and communities.

We are committed to ongoing learning, reflection, and strengthening our cultural capability to ensure our services reflect the values and intentions of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

Tō Mātou Whakaaetanga ki Te Tiriti o Waitangi

Our Commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi

The Tauranga Community Foodbank is committed to honouring Te Tiriti o Waitangi and giving effect to its principles of Partnership (Mahi Tahi), Protection (Tiakitanga), and Participation (Whai Wāhitanga). Our commitment is grounded in kaupapa Māori values, including manaakitanga, whanaungatanga, kotahitanga, and tino rangatiratanga.

We honour Te Tiriti o Waitangi through the following principles:

Partnership | Mahi Tahi

The Tauranga Community Foodbank is committed to building and sustaining meaningful, respectful relationships with Tangata Whenua. We recognise iwi and hapū as mana whenua and honour their role as kaitiaki within Tauranga Moana.

Through shared understanding, kōrero, and collective action, we work alongside over sixty referral agencies, Tauranga City Council, Mana Kai Mana Ora (Bay of Plenty Kai Resilience), Kore Hiakai Zero Hunger Collective and other community partners to develop kaupapa and service approaches that are aligned, culturally responsive, and beneficial to Māori whānau and the wider community. These partnerships are founded on trust, reciprocity, and a shared commitment to enhancing wellbeing and food security.

Protection | Tiakitanga

The Tauranga Community Foodbank is committed to the active protection of Māori tikanga, te reo Māori, taonga, and mātauranga Māori. We strive to embed these values within our governance, policies, and everyday practice.

Through our relationships with Tangata Whenua and community partners, we support the realisation of tino rangatiratanga, ensuring Māori ways of knowing, being, and doing are respected, valued, and upheld in the delivery of our services.

Participation | Whai Wāhitanga

The Tauranga Community Foodbank is committed to ensuring equitable, accessible, and mana-enhancing support for Tangata Whenua and all who access our services. We recognise the importance of culturally appropriate, whānau-centred pathways that allow people to engage with our services in ways that uphold their dignity, identity, and self-determination.

We are committed to partnership with Tangata Whenua, the protection of Māori culture and taonga, and the embodiment of kaupapa Māori in our mahi. We acknowledge that a strong bicultural foundation is essential to community resilience, social equity, and collective wellbeing in Tauranga and across Aotearoa.
