Christmas Appeal 2024

The holidays are a time for joy, family, and of course, good food. But for many families in our community, putting food on the table is a daily struggle. That’s where we come in — and where you can help.

For over 12 years, the Foodbank Christmas Appeal has been bringing our community together to support those in need. Driven by the amazing team at the Bay of Plenty Times, this campaign has raised over $1 million in cash and nearly $500,000 in groceries. That’s huge! The donations represent anywhere from 30 – 60% of our annual donations.

But the need is still great, and we’re counting on you to help us make this year’s appeal the best one yet.

You can make a difference in the lives of people in need
Donate Now

Every day, donations from our generous community send tamariki (kids) to school with breakfast and lunch.

Donations provide evening meals for whānau (families) feeling the pressure of incomes stretched too far and unable to cover the rising costs of living. It also means our isolated, elderly, and homeless community members can get a package of food, tailored to their needs.

The increased costs of living are driving demand and despair higher than we’ve seen before.  We’re backing this community for the long haul. Here are some ways you can help.

Donating Money

Did you know that we purchase 70% of our kai (food)?

We buy a lot in bulk so we can be as economical as possible. We also spend a lot of time hunting for good deals, as local as possible. We also get some great discounts from generous suppliers so we can stretch our dollars. This means monetary donations are essential for us.

Your donation in context:

A Donation of $25

Provides one person with four days’ kai support. Imagine the relief for that person!

A Donation of $50

Provides a family of four with four days’ kai support. Kids with kai in their tummies; parents with less stress.

A Monthly Payment of $100

Means you would have provided four days’ kai and grocery support for 24 families by the end of the year. That is a truly special gift.

A Weekly Payment of $50

Means you would have provided four days’ kai support to 52 Tauranga families by the end of the year. Wow – can you imagine the difference that is making?

How to donate

Did you know that 100% of any monetary donation you make goes directly to the people who need it?

This is because of the support of our amazing funders which covers our operational expenses.

Donating Food & Grocery Products

We are so grateful for any kai (food), drink or grocery donations and will put everything to good use.

Some of the things we are always in need of are:

  • Good quality fresh produce, ideally with a bit of shelf-life left.
  • Treats like chips, biscuits and muesli bars. We don’t buy these things and it’s nice to include a couple when we can.
  • Cereals, spreads, hot drinks and canned goods.
  • Nappies – particularly larger sizes – and other sanitary and self-care products.
  • Bags are really useful and we would appreciate any spare ones you may have – for example reusable produce bags or chiller bags (we’ve got plenty of paper bags though).
  • We don’t give out alcohol, energy drinks or out of date products as part of our food support.
  • If you have a food donation to make please visit us in person during office hours or call to arrange an appointment.

Corporate Sponsorship

We are lucky that some amazing businesses in the community get behind us each year to fundraise.

If your business would like to become a sponsor, we would love to discuss some exciting options with you. We have lots of ideas around how we can celebrate your involvement and get your teams onboard.

  • You may like to make a regular or one off donation.
  • You may also have a product or service that may be useful for us.
  • We are happy to arrange for someone from the foodbank to come and talk to your teams if that is useful. Please request a call.
