Christmas Appeal 2024

The holidays are a time for joy, family, and of course, good food. But for many families in our community, putting food on the table is a daily struggle. That’s where we come in — and where you can help.

For over 12 years, the Foodbank Christmas Appeal has been bringing our community together to support those in need. Driven by the amazing team at the Bay of Plenty Times, this campaign has raised over $1 million in cash and nearly $500,000 in groceries. That’s huge! The donations represent anywhere from 30 – 60% of our annual donations.

But the need is still great, and we’re counting on you to help us make this year’s appeal the best one yet.

Anyone in our Tauranga community can get food support from us

We work on a referral basis. Many of our referrals come from an organisation called Here to help U, which connects people in need to the appropriate community provider.

We also have relationships with more than 100 community groups and organisations throughout Tauranga that refer people to us. These include schools, cultural groups, churches, social workers, budget advisers, and community centres.

We sit on the Mana Kai Mana Ora (Western Bay of Plenty Kai Resilience) Steering Group, where we work collaboratively with many multicultural organisations towards a core goal of Kotahitanga: Unity, togetherness, collective action.

  • Once referred, we provide tailored food and grocery support. In general, we aim to provide four days’ food for each person in the household. We also try our best to cater to any special dietary requirements and cultural needs.
  • When clients have been referred from one of the Financial Mentoring Services, they can choose to shop at our Foodbank Store. This is a separate space onsite where clients can use a points system to choose their own food from the shelves.
  • Once clients have received food support four times within a 12-month period, they are referred to one of our financial mentoring services for free support. These services can continue to refer the client back to us for more support if needed.

If you need help now please contact Here to Help U. See a full list of our referral agencies.
